One of the most common vitamin deficiencies is Vitamin D deficiency. A large portion of the patients I test for vitamin D are deficient. This only gets worse during the winter months when sun exposure drops and hence the production of vitamin D declines dramatically.
Why is it important to get enough Vitamin D? Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with a variety of illnesses including including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and depression. Vitamin D deficiency is really easy to treat. At my clinic I have Vitamin D supplements available for those that have low Vitamin D. Most over the counter supplements only provide up to 1000 - 2000 IU of Vitamin D. For those that are deficient it can take quite a while to raise the Vitamin D level. At my practice (available to patients and non-patients) I have a 50,000 IU supplement that is taken once per week and can restore Vitamin D levels in 4-5 months. It only takes around 15 pills. There is some controversy about what the minimal adequate levels of Vitamin D are. Conventional wisdom is that a minimum of 20 ng/ml is adequate. However, recently, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that raising your serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) to 40ng/ml can slash your risk of all invasive cancers by 67 percent. According to the study co-author Cedric Garland, Dr.P.H.: "We have quantitated the ability of adequate amounts of vitamin D to prevent all types of invasive cancer combined, which had been terra incognita until publication of this paper... These findings support an inverse association between 25(OH)D and risk of cancer, and highlight the importance for cancer prevention of achieving a vitamin D blood serum concentration above 20 ng/ml, the concentration recommended by the IOM for bone health." Therefore, it may be the case that optimal levels of Vitamin D are in the range of 40-50 ng/ml. Prior to taking Vitamin D I recommend measuring your level. If you don't get a lot of sun exposure on a daily basis then you are likely deficient. Visit Murdock Health or call to see what Vitamin D supplement is appropriate for you. I have both 5000 IU and 50,000 IU supplements which are pictured below.

The future of Obamacare may depend to a certain degree on the result of the upcoming election. The two candidates differ widely on health care policy including whether Obamacare should be continued or repealed. Your vote could help determine the trajectory of U.S. health for years to come.
It can sometimes be hard to predict what the end result of a particular policy will be but I think it can be instructive to learn from the success or failure of other health care models. Of particular note it was not long ago that the socialist Venezuelan health model was touted as one of the jewels of South America. According to the Guardian, "for years, among the proudest boasts of the Bolivarian Socialist administration was that it eradicated hunger, reduced poverty and improved healthcare for the poor." And how fast things have changed. Now only a short time later the Guardian reports that "the trend now appears to be moving in the opposite direction at an alarming speed. Reliable data is hard to find. The government has acknowledged that maternal mortality – a key healthcare indicator – has doubled in the past year. The opposition says the deterioration is five-fold – and that death of newborns increased 100-fold." In addition, "the Venezuelan Health Observatory, a research centre at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, estimates that fewer than 10% of operating theatres, emergency rooms and intensive care units are fully operational. It says 76% of hospitals suffer from scarcity of medicines, 81% have a lack of surgical materials and 70% complain of intermittent water supply." Venezuela is suffering from severe shortages reminiscent of the bread lines in the Soviet Union and it will only get worse as the government there attempts to control the situation. Prices are also skyrocketing. This is the inevitable result of an intrusive and socialized government health care policy. The same thing has happened in other countries where socialized medicine is the norm. It is common for citizens of these nations to wait in long queues for routine surgeries or even potentially life threatening conditions. Many citizens of these countries come to the United States to get the care they are not getting in their own countries. However, if Obamacare continues unaltered that trend may not continue. Obamacare is already following the same trends seen in Venezuela and other countries. Prices of Obamacare health care plans are skyrocketing and the number of doctors willing to take Obamacare insurance and the number of insurance companies willing to provide these plans are shrinking. While at the same time citizens are being punished by the IRS for not purchasing these plans. In the end this will lead to a situation of less medical choice and more government control over your healthcare as they resort to cost containment measures such as rationing to keep costs in line. Thankfully, there are solutions to the crisis. First, make your vote count. Secondly, you can support doctors, like myself, that are outside the system and see patients at more reasonable rates. Supporting these doctors will simultaneously make healthcare more affordable while promoting more healthcare freedom at the same time. Thirdly, there are health care co-ops like Christian Healthcare Ministries, Liberty Healthshare, and Medishare that provide affordable insurance coverage that qualify under Obamacare.
